yes! personally in an effort to use my phone less i’m writing out all my favourite internet recipes into a little notebook so i don’t have to scroll so much!!
if you want to be really fancy you can get one of those recipe binders that has a section to write recipes, a section to plan dinner parties and a little stack of notecards so you can write the recipes for your friends! it just makes the act of cooking and hosting so much more personal and cosy in my opinion
I’m inspired!! my roommate and I cook together a lot we have a shared Instagram folder of recipes maybe I could convert them to a book and surprise her 😌
My mom made a little cookbook for me one year for Christmas with all our favorite family written recipes in it - nothing overly complicated. It was the best gift ever.
I feel this so deeply and it’s a joy I rediscovered in large part to a little app called Forage that my partner I built to help me search the index pages of my cookbook collection! If anyone’s interested you can try it here for free: app.foragebooks.com 💜💚
I love to do this! I have one of Julia Child's cookbooks and I try to to cook new things from it instead of googling. A little stand to prop your book open is key for ease
been on the hunt for a vintage alarm clock that doesn't scream at you in a really horrible way. The worst thing to wake up to. I know logically the horrible sound was to force people to get up but gosh. horrible. It's a major barrier to going phone-free in the bedroom!
I'm a big fan of "movie theater roulette" - just show up at an indie theater and watch whatever movie is playing next. I like the element of chance, plus I've seen some very interesting, strange things this way.
My husband and I used to play a game with the Zagat guide (a restaurant rating book pre-internet!) called Zagat pick-out or something like that where we would just open it up to a page and go somewhere on that page for dinner. And get this — you could often go to restaurants, even popular ones, without a reservation. 😔 Sometimes we would call first. ☎️
when I drove Route 66 I took the book Roadfood with me (Jane & Michael Stern) and found A Slice of Pie in Rolla, Missouri. I drove halfway across the country a few times after that and always made a point to go through Rolla. I bought boxes and boxes of pies to take to my son in college. all from flipping through the book.
they now have a website ( roadfood.com ) and you can go to Restaurants Near Me, put in the cities and towns around you and see what comes up. (I just did this and found out there's a pizza place they really like very near me. so trying that soon.)
I love this! I was just having a conversation with my friend about how abundance of choice (Netflix, streaming sites, etc.) really took away the pleasure of sitting down and watching a movie you *have* to watch.
I put an old little TV and VCR in my kitchen. I’ve loved having Practical Magic, Casper and You’ve Got Mail on rotation in the background. Other favorites are old British TV shows, like The Vicar of Dibley.
I’ve been wanting to get one again! I have a bunch of cds in my childhood bedroom I’d love to give new life to. My friend has a dvd player and her dvd collection is so fun to flip through I’ve low key been wanting that too
Ooo! We're doing the same, but with a vinyl player. My husband and I started our collection of vinyls, and we thrift them even when we're on hols and travels. Feels like a little vintage luxury! (We're both in our 40s btw so we're the radio + audio cassette generation 😁)
when I was a kid my mom had a bathroom calendar which had everyone’s birthdays. At the start of every year, she would copy them all into the next years calendar. I want to bring that back into my life
Ahhh I loved this piece!! In full support of going more analog- I’ve been putting my phone on grayscale mode and writing on my lunch breaks, and it’s been such a game changer. 🥹
Writing lunch breaks are the way to go! I have a nice park near my office and I want to sit there and write on my breaks until it gets too cold to do so 🥶 there’s a little fountain and sometimes a jazz band busks there it’s ideal writing conditions
All of this. I'm encouraged to see the enthusiasm for dialing back the technology. Lovely list! I've been buying the newspaper on Sundays the last few weeks. So satisfying.
i love that what a perfect Sunday ritual. I’ve been wanting to do a no phone morning routine and I feel like Sunday would be perfect for it- no scrolling just like wake up, make a little breakfast, read the newspaper, it sounds so nice
analog fall winter tips: at least 20 mn of reading first thing in the morning, physical book first and a little Substack after, when you have groceries near the house do not take the phone with you & enjoy the walk, picking up a new hobbie (extra curriculum bonus points), (I picked up knitting because I want to gift my mom a knitted Squirrel...I'm 29 and so so happy). brunch is so chic I agree, and meeting up with your friends often to dance the night away, drinking but not too much (one beer a night is so cute), long walk in nature and taking in the beauty of every sights, writing poems. HAPPY ANALOG FALL GIRLIES! Thanks you Keepsake <3
I put myself on a TikTok ban for the last week and I found myself doing a lot of the things you mentioned. I went on a coffee date to try new fall flavors, went on an evening walk around the neighborhood, tried some new movies at home. It’s a game changer when you’re intentional and present 🧡 loved reading this!
Yes!! I’m trying to watercolor more I just bought a little book of natural paper in Paris that would be perfect for it I’m hoping it’ll make me actually paint 🫶🏼
Yes! I bought a watercolour set from Chavrin in Paris a month ago and I think we need to challenge each other to paint more 🤣 I get sucked in by the computer a little too easily.
cooking a recipe from an actual cookbook instead of following along a tiktok recipe!
Oh I LOVE that! My mom’s cookbooks all have food stains from actually using them over the years I aspire to get mine as lived in
I collect cookbooks, and I try to write notes about the recipe in them - what I substituted, what would be better next time, etc.
so smart
yes! personally in an effort to use my phone less i’m writing out all my favourite internet recipes into a little notebook so i don’t have to scroll so much!!
I’ve been thinking of doing that! I love recipe books

Bonus points if the cookbook is from the library!

That is such a smart app idea!
Downloaded! Thank you

that is awesome 🥰
Started doing this myself....I made pickles. Words I never thought I'd say!
yess i love this! and i'd add using a physical alarm clock so you don't reach for your phone first thing in the morning.
I’ve been thinking about getting one! I feel like there could be some cute ones to thrift too
I just set up my new little alarm clock tonight. No app. Just cute tactile buttons. 🥰
God how I miss buttons!
yayy!

this isn't vintage but this is the one i use! amazon.com/dp/B081CHLF46?ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_fed_asin_title
all the ring tones are soothing and you can even opt to be woken up with just the light. i highly recommend!
oooo thank you for this recommendation!

oh I loooove that

RIP Zagat - need to figure out a modern equivalent of this restaurant game!

I loooove this! My mom has a tiny tv in her kitchen and I used to love watching shows while she cooked growing up or seeing her watch the food network
For analog fall, I’m going to try and use my cd player more often🩷
I’ve been wanting to get one again! I have a bunch of cds in my childhood bedroom I’d love to give new life to. My friend has a dvd player and her dvd collection is so fun to flip through I’ve low key been wanting that too
I have been checking out DVDs from the library and that feels very 90s!

Lately my husband will search for record stores before we go anywhere so he can surprise me… and book stores 😊
Oh that is so sweet!
when I was a kid my mom had a bathroom calendar which had everyone’s birthdays. At the start of every year, she would copy them all into the next years calendar. I want to bring that back into my life
Do it!
On my calendar I include the birthdays of my parents and grandparents, all deceased, but still in my heart.
wish-I-had-a-90s-adulthood disease is soooo real and consuming lol
It’s TERMINAL I fear

I also just went on a 3 mile walk with just my...thoughts. How novel! No podcast, no music. I try to do that once a week.
A nothing but my thoughts walk is a STAPLE in my routine
I had this idea to use my local library as a “blockbuster” to rent dvds and watch them at home on my old dvd player!

I LOVE THIS!! Thanks for the tips!!
I love this! One could even make an analog bingo card and add all of these activities.
I did bingo cards this summer and now I’m pissed I didn’t do an analog fall one!! Coming soon maybe 📝
I have been meaning to take a lunch date at my local art museum
Sounds heavenly
I have been finally getting my textbooks from the library for schoolwork instead of online. It has made such a lovely difference<3

Intentional and present is the goal! Thanks Lauren :)
LOVE THIS. Also, as a graphic artist I hereby make a solemn vow TO USE ACTUAL PAINT. Not just Photoshop. Amen.
Yes!! I’m trying to watercolor more I just bought a little book of natural paper in Paris that would be perfect for it I’m hoping it’ll make me actually paint 🫶🏼

Okay I’m coming back to this comment section in a few weeks and you better have some painting to report on 😉
I’m on it.
I mean it.
